Updated review Aug 2023: Still the best sandwich I've ever had. Prices have gone up a bit but still worth the trip from Olympia, WA.
Original review July 2022: Took a day trip down to Portland. While there got a recommendation from a local store owner saying this was one of the best sandwich shops in town. Being skeptical we hesitantly decided to stop by. So glad we did! One of best sandwiches we've had in a long time. The place is not much to look at. Just a hole in a wall along a busy street with many store fronts but man... what an experience! Had the pulled pork sandwich. Ciabatta bun, perfectly toasted. Meat was tender and super flavorful. The BBQ sauces wasn't anything I've tasted before. The slaw also gave a bit of sweet & savory crunch in just the right places. Unique flavor and spot-on for a pulled pork if that's what you are in to. Just a fantastic sandwich overall. Didn't care for the pickles although we could tell they were homemade. Nothing wrong with them, just not our taste in pickles. We asked the gentleman at the counter what his favorite is. Said the #5 followed closely by the #1- pulled pork. Although a bit pricey, still highly recommend this sandwich shop. The To-go menu flyers doesn't reflect their new prices so go by the pic I took of the menu inside the store.
Random sandwich shop pit stop. Hearty sandwiches for big size hunger. Same bread used for all so variance of ingredients is warranted otherwise the flavors all bleed together. Room for improvement all around, but appreciate their heavy use of kale and combos. No restroom, no water station. Counter service and HOT outside patio dining.
I was so excited about this place after my vegan friend told me she breaks her veganism to have the beef sandwich here. Perhaps I came in with too high of expectations but the food was totally average. We ordered the #1 (house smoked 5 spice pulled pork), #4 (red wine braised beef), and #5 (house roasted turkey). Sandwiches looked better than they tasted. They were okay. If I was vegan, this wouldn't turn me. It looks like they do make their own bread which is cool. Tomato jam wasn't balanced. I lived in Germany and grew up on German potato salad... this looked sad, the texture was off, the flavor wasn't it. The prices were solid for nowadays. Service was rough but one guy was cool. Not driving back to Hawthorne for this though.
Stumbled upon this place today at lunch. Ordered two sandwiches, the turkey one and the bacon one. I’m not a fan of raw kale, the guy told me it wasn’t your normal crunchy kale, it’s kinda marinated, so I tried it and it was awesome! I ate half of each one and they were both amazing! Hard to find a really good sandwich and these guys killed it!
Best sandwiches in town. Best BLT going! What's tomatoe jam? I don't know, but I know there's is so go I get a side of it.
It's a simple sandwich shop with around 12 options, but the sandwiches are genuinely excellent. I had the pulled pork sandwich, which was delicious. I also sampled the grilled asparagus, which was also great.
Part of Devil's Dill's charm comes from their unassuming punkrock store front. Write on the walls while you wqit for your dope sandwich
Everyrhing here slaps. I get the #5 with a side of the sauted kale. My homie loves the #3 with the genuine german potato salad
Because they are the good portal for the next door bar (NO FUN) they end staying open super late
During the day, they are one of several excellent sandwich spots on the eastside, by midnight, they are the absolute best food in town
I would willingly throw up a $100 meal just to make room for one of these sandos, hearing the word “devil” in any context make my mouth water for the pavlovian response is real. If they called upon me, i would march into battle against any other sandwich shop in town. If i had a last meal on death row, it would be dealers choice off the menu here.
